Plockton was founded in 1794 as a planned fishing village. By 1841 the population was 550, in 50 to 60 houses.

Plockton was founded in 1794 as a planned fishing village. By 1841 the population was 550, in 50 to 60 houses.
In 1843, the Disruption split the Church of Scotland. In common with the rest of the Highlands, almost the entire congregation of Plockton moved over to the Free Church.
Along with Ireland, severe famine struck in 1846 when the potato crop was blighted. Emigration and population decline followed.
Between 1870 and 1920, the number of professionally qualified people who had their basic education at Plockton School was five times the national average.
By 1870, the railway line had eached Strome, and extended in 1898 to Plockton and Kyle. This latter extension was the most costly ever undertaken.
First World War casualties further hit population levels. The first marriage of a Plockton man in 10 years took place in 1924.
Plockton’s fortunes revived during the 1970s with the rise of travel and tourism. Plockton is known in many far-flung parts.
Three series of the BBC drama ‘Hamish Macbeth’, starring Robert Carlyle, were filmed in the 1990s. You will be able to spot many locations used in the shooting.
